0 Finished MCSD Studio
The studio is finally completely finished and I’ve been up and running for a few weeks. Here are some real world working pictures of the space. The room sounds great and is incredibly comfortable and versatile.
0 New Studio Sneak Peak
Started moving gear into the new studio tonight! There is still some minor finishing work to be done but I’m able to finalize equipment placement and begin acoustic treatment. The plan is to be back up and running in two weeks. Just in time to start a couple of cool gigs I can’t talk about yet… doh! Gotta say I’m jonesin’ to get back to work and reclaim the rest of the house – which is currently in utter chaos.
Thanks Matt Allen and Pat Sullivan for all the help!
Jimmy, Jim and Eddy at Wildwood Builders have done a fantastic job!
More pics as things progress.
0 MCSD Studio Construction Update
Lots of progress on the new studio and wanted to share the news. I know in the last post I said the next post will be when the space is finished but I’m excited damn it!
Electrical work is finished and Heating and Cooling is being installed today. The new windows will be installed next Monday and the drywall will go up on Tuesday. The built in cabinets and storage area will be finished tomorrow along with the rest of the insulation. Everything is still on schedule to have the space finished, painted and carpet installed on Sept. 14th! Wooohooooo! The folks at Wildwood Builders are amazing.
0 MCSD Studio & NetLabel relocation and remodel
I’ve worked from home for 25 years. It’s been great and I wouldn’t even consider moving to a location outside the home however there are trade-offs. One of those trade-offs is the household wide disruption that takes place when it’s time to upgrade – or in this case – move and remodel the studio. C-H-A-O-S.
For the 3 1/2 years we’ve lived in Irvington Court Cooperative, the studio has been in the basement. It’s been a great space and home for dRachEmUsiK, Faux Pas Quartet, Music from last Thursday, numerous collaborations, Mastering and commercial projects.
And the basement leaked.

After the incessant torrential rains this year we said enough is enough.
Ugh, this meant distributing my instruments and gear around the house to make room for all the “stuff” that was living in the attic. I set up an interim busy-ness space in Burt’s office and he set up a temporary work are in the living room. So yea, the house in in utter chaos. On the up-side, the cats are absolutely loving all the new stacks, boxes, nooks and crannies to explore.
Our friend Jimmy Cahil at Wildwood Builders but together a great plan to remodel the attic and they began demolition and construction last week. I’m amazed at the amount of progress they have made and super happy with the quality of the work! They have this week off for vacation so things have been quiet. But we did get the space measured, carpet ordered, diffusers and sound treatment ordered, HVAC install measurements taken, recessed lighting, new switch box and ethernet cable all arrived. So in spite of the lack of construction the project is still moving along. Wildwood will resume construction this coming Monday and expect to have the space completely finished by September 14th. It will be a great space! Right now I’m in a state of disbelief at how wonderful the studio will be.
Here are some pictures of the space currently. Next post will be when the new space is ready for move in!
0 New release from remst8 & dRachEmUsiK

“Bluestones” is the culmination of dRachEmUsiK (Charles Shriner, Indianapolis, IN) and remst8 (Michael Carlson / Olathe, KS) embarking on a weekend-long adventure in collaborative sound design and music improvisation. This journey began with a strategy to record a series of brief lowercase “micro-compositions”, which would then be woven together into a longer tapestry.
This strategy became obsolete almost immediately.
As sound palettes were created, the duo quickly realized that brief pieces would not provide enough breathing room. Instead, each one was allowed to grow organically from the sounds used—a collection of analog synthesis, digital soft synths, and sample manipulation—fueled by collaborative experimentation.
The end result is a lovely mix of ambient, drone and lowercase soundscapes.

Theremin and Electronic Wind Instrument are the primary instruments used to create this spontaneous sonic journey. Recorded in 2012 between the afternoon of November 12th and the morning of the 13th, there was very little planning regarding approach, structure, instrumentation or style. We would talk, share about our lives, eat, go to the market, sleep and in-between sit down and make music. The end result was a musical conversation between elements of our unconscious; a dream-world mirror of the surrounding shared conscious reality. Close your eyes, relax and experience what these simple yet emotionally rich dialogs have to say to you.
